Our son Emmet was a boy with passions, which changed over time from when he was little: elevators, origami, rainbow loom, Hamilton, skateboarding, Fortnite, Simpsons, and roller coasters. While his passions were alive, they burned intensely.
When he was about three and four, the passion was playgrounds. He loved the big twisty slides and running up and down the ramps. We spent hours at various playgrounds in Stamford, anytime the weather allowed. Emmet’s occupational therapist had also noted a need for him to strengthen his core, and she suggested playground monkey bars as a way of achieving this goal. When Emmet put his mind to something, there was no stopping him and he would spend hours on the monkey bars, falling to the ground and getting back up again. We were in Long Beach Island at the end of one summer when he was finally able to effortlessly fly across. I will always remember the pride he exuded as he looked at us, exclaiming, “I did it!” The determination he showed us then was never more evident than his last six months at the hospital.
It makes sense to us to build a playground in his honor and memory. It will be a place that Emmet’s friends can play and remember him, a place where kids like Emmet who love playgrounds will be able to be carefree or meet challenges, like Emmet did.
We would be honored if you would help us build this playground which will serve as a concrete legacy to the memory of Emmet.
