About Me

Hi! My name is Emma Augustyn, and I am a freshman at Texas Christian University majoring in biology and minoring in business and Spanish on the pre-dental track. I was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, where the rest of my extended family lives, but I moved to Minnesota when I was five and grew up there. I went to a smaller private high school, so I was really excited to come to TCU and meet lots of different people. I really want to focus on being as successful academically as I can while still having fun and exploring new interests. My mom is a dentist, and she really inspired me growing up, and that is why I have decided to pursue dental school, so that hopefully I can make a difference in kids' lives. I want to help them stay healthy but also help them be confident and proud of their smiles.

I grew up on the lake, so I spent a lot of time outside. My favorite time of year is summer because it's so sunny, and there are plenty of things to do, like wake surf, swim, or tan with friends. In the winters, since we get a ton of snow in Minnesota, my mom taught me and my siblings to ski on the smaller mountains, and now we have a family tradition to go to Deer Valley in Utah and ski every year. I like to be active, so when I have the time, I run and do 5Ks and 10Ks. I also really like to read, bake, and watch movies. I think one of my biggest passions is my love for traveling. My two top places I would love to visit have to be Greece and South Africa. 

Academically, I want to maintain a 3.8-4.0 and get my prerequisites done for dental school. I also would like to join more clubs and really work on my volunteer hours since I need around 150 or more before sending in my dental school application. I am also hoping that next year I can go abroad and live in Spain to fulfill my minor requirements there. I went to immersion school and have spoken Spanish since kindergarten. I also had an exchange student named Carlota from Barcelona who stayed with us during middle school for 3 years, and she has become an older sister who we go and visit every couple of years. If I were to study abroad in Spain, I could go and see her, which would be really fun, and I would improve my Spanish drastically. Once I graduate, I would like to get into dental school and then specialize to become a pediatric dentist and eventually open my own practice, which is why I am minoring in business, because to properly run my practice I will need some background education. I created this digital portfolio to share my writing and projects with my professor and peers, while developing my creativity and writing skills. I hope to strengthen my English foundation and learn more tools to write academically rigorous essays to be successful in all my courses throughout my academic career.
