My name is Emi Sim, and I am a senior at Carlmont High School. Through journalism, I have discovered my true love for writing.
Journalism fuels the curiosity I've had since childhood: the instinct to constantly ask "why" and question anything I don't fully understand. I'm inspired by journalism's power to challenge what we think we know and uncover hidden layers beneath each story. Through reporting, research, and interviews, I've learned how to turn that curiosity into impactful storytelling. Writing for my school's news site, Scot Scoop, has deepened my appreciation for writing and the English language.
During my senior summer, I had the opportunity to serve as a night copy editor for The Daily Californian, UC Berkeley's student-run news publication. There, I copy edited articles, wrote headlines and captions, met with the Daily Cal Night Department, and wrote my own article for the publication's language and grammar blog, Strikeout.
For the 2025-2026 school year, I am excited to serve as an editor on Scot Scoop. My job is to revise and publish articles and write editorials on behalf of the editorial board. Outside of school, I’m eager to continue growing through my work as a design intern at the Belmont Water Dog Run and as a volunteer designer for the Villages of San Mateo County.
Aside from journalism, I also find joy in playing volleyball, playing the flute, traveling with my family, and exploring new food spots with friends.
