Over the course of this project, I received valuable feedback from my project manager, community partners, and Professor that has helped me grow as a teacher and facilitator. The evaluations highlighted several strengths in my teaching practice, as well as areas where I continue to grow. I’ve made a conscious effort to reflect on this feedback and integrate it into my approach.
One key strength that was consistently noted was my ability to create an engaging environment. This was particularly evident during field trips, where I got to know my students through their passions and was able to weave them through our activities. This positive feedback reaffirmed my belief in the importance of fun and inclusivity and encouraged me to continue building on these practices.
Another area where I received positive feedback was my calm, but encouraging, presence. For instance, one of my team members noted that I talked to students like they were my peers, not 7-year-olds, allowing them to step into a role teachers don't usually put them in, one where they felt their voice was important. This helped me recognize how my approach supports engagement and learning beyond the classroom.
At the same time, I received constructive feedback around areas I am continuing to develop. One such area was modeling activity instructions. In response to this, I began to incorporate modeling of behavior and activities rather than simply telling students my expectations, they saw it from me first. I also sought guidance from my project managers and experimented when assisting, which helped me feel more confident and effective in this aspect of my teaching.
Another point of growth identified was engaging chaperones in our field trips. I appreciated this feedback because I tended to overwhelm myself, thinking I needed to hand out the supplies and explain the activity all at once. To address this, I made sure to ask chaperones for help when passing out materials and ask them questions just as much as the students, and I plan to continue working on this by asking for help when needed in any situation. This specific feedback has helped me realize how I can work more diligently with others support.
Overall, the feedback I received has been instrumental in shaping my teaching practice. It has pushed me to reflect deeply on how I show up for students and community partners, and to be intentional in aligning my teaching with the values of equity, inclusion, and collaboration. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn through practice and feedback, and I look forward to continuing to evolve as an educator and leader.
