Yellow Peril (An Unintended Collaboration) is a ceramic vase exploring violence, resilience, and identity. In it’s greenware state, it was later stabbed repeatedly by an unknown assailant. This unplanned destruction became central to the piece, embedding it with a narrative of trauma and survival. Glazed in vibrant yellow, a color tied to Asian identity and the racialized fear of "Yellow Peril," the vase features neon light inside, turning the wound into a glowing focal point. An unconventional title card, cut in yellow and marked with red handwritten amendments, emphasizes themes of disruption. This work reflects the fear and vulnerability I’ve felt at university as the target of hate crimes. The vandalization mirrors the invasive and destructive nature of these experiences. Yet, through completing and reimagining the piece, it serves as a testament to reclaiming agency in the face of violence.
