Plate Narratives is a collection of ceramic plates that encapsulate personal memories, exploring the internal and external conflicts of my Asian American identity. From being fetishized by a man on a boat because of my race to fearing I may one day forget how to write my Chinese name, each plate serves as a vessel for suppressed recollections. The utility of plates has always been to serve, and these plates extend that purpose by presenting marginalized stories as a means to be seen, understood, and engaged with. This installation represents both service to self—allowing me to confront and release these truths—and service to others by inviting viewers to reflect on and connect with these experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of identity and cultural heritage.
