Consistent, explicit, and structured routines.
During the first week of school, I prioritize building consistent, explicit, and structured routines. In my student teaching experience, I intentionally dedicated that first week of the new semester to helping students learn expectations, procedures, and classroom routines.
I didn’t just explain them. I had students actively practice them through interactive, hands-on activities and games that modeled exactly what I expected. This helped students feel more confident and gave them a clear understanding of how the classroom would run. By investing that time upfront, it created a smoother and more productive learning environment for the rest of the semester.
