During my time at the University of Georgia, I was deeply involved with UGA Miracle, a student-run organization that raises funds and awareness for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. I served on a committee during my freshman year before taking on leadership roles throughout my sophomore, junior, and senior years. As Fundraising Co-Chair during my senior year, I helped lead campus-wide fundraising campaigns and initiatives that contributed to raising more than $1 million for the kids and families we served. While the fundraising milestones were incredibly rewarding, the most meaningful part of my experience was building relationships with the children and families directly impacted by our efforts. Spending time with them reinforced that the difference we were making extended far beyond the dollars raised—it was about providing hope, support, and a community that stood beside them throughout their journey.
ESP provides opportunities for people of all abilities to engage in activities that allow the participants to be apart of an inclusive community. As a volunteer, I walked through the activities and experiences with my buddy, celebrating them along the way. At events, my buddies danced, played games, and even got to meet the Georgia Football Team. Through these events, I helped participants develop relationships, social skills, and learn or master new skills. Working together with other volunteers, we provided an opportunity for participants to thrive and meet their recreational therapy goals.
As an undergraduate teaching assistant for an organic chemistry 1 class, I regularly attended class and aided in student classroom participation. During class, I answered student questions and further explained concepts that students did not understand. I helped facilitate student discussion and often addressed their grievances after test grades were released. Throughout the semester, I built relationships with the students in the class and other members of the UTA team. Through these relationships, I was better able to help students succeed.
As a volunteer with the backpack project, I worked together with other volunteers to help plan and cook meals. I packaged and delivered meals and other necessities to people experiencing homelessness in encampments and the surrounding Athens area.
