I am one of the four co-creators of Emillia and am a dual degree student at Georgia Tech from Morehouse College majoring in Applied Physics and Mechanical Engineering. I grew up on the south side of Chicago, IL under adverse financial circumstances and can speak to how real the saying “the rich get richer and the poor get poorer’ actually is. This makes the issue of our game so much more important to me as someone who experienced people having severe financial hardships and having little control over their situation. My focus for Emillia was the development of the socio-economic system used within the game. As a kid, I loved playing games like Assassin’s Creed II which was set in medieval times and got me interested in exploring more about the truths of Middle Ages culture, society, and much more. That experience helped inspire what we envisioned for Emillia. My goal is to be able to do things I love for a living, create a comfortable life for myself, and make a positive impact on as many people along the way. In my free time, I still like to play video games, play basketball with friends, listen to music, or spend some time with my family.
My name is Ethan Loo, member of the Emillia developer team. My childhood was full of reading books like Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and Lord of the Rings. My favourite movies were adaptations of those books and any movie that transported me back to the Middle Ages were always fun and captivating. Later on in my childhood, I would fall in love with video games. Like books and movies, I would be transported to worlds that once could only exist in the mind but were now laid out all around me.
My love for video games inspired me to create my own game and delve into the world of game development. My first game was made in Unity, using C# to write scripts for different game objects. I am an undergraduate student at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I major in Computer Science and my concentration is in Artificial Intelligence and integrating forms of creative art with the digital realm.
In the creation of the world of Kinslic, we did not want the world to simply be a generic interpretation of a fictional medieval world. Instead, it was imperative to me that Kinslic was something that would blow players’ minds away because of its fascinating, breath-taking landscape and otherworldly culture.
I am Rohit Patil, and I am one of Emillia's Game Developers and Programmers for the video game. Growing up, I have had plenty of exposure to neomedievalism through playing neo medieval board games such as Catan and Dominion. Additionally, I have experience playing role playing medieval games such as Dungeons and Dragons and Genshin Impact. Overall, I have immense interest in medieval style games and the aspects of these games that make them so popular and appealing. Having this background experience, I am able to oversee the game’s development and provide beneficial insight to making Emillia a popular and immersive game for players.
As an undergraduate student at Georgia Institute of Technology studying Computer Science, I have sufficient programming skills to bring this game to reality. In the past, I have worked with teams to develop iOS mobile app games as well as utility apps. This unique experience allows for a different perspective being presented throughout game development and allows for the transformation of Emillia being an idea into a playable game. Furthermore, my experience allows Emillia to become a game with a great user interface, graphics, and controls allowing for further engagement with our players.
Finally, having studied the increasing wealth gap in previous classes and how it is impacting our economy in the real world, I have ample background experience in understanding how to effectively portray Emillia to garner real world change in regards to the wealth inequality that exists in our real world.
My name is Sammy Rizzo, and I am one of the original Game Developers for Emillia. I am a candidate for a BS in Chemistry with a Minor in French at Georgia Institute of Technology. My hobbies include music, art, and athletics. I also frequently enjoy playing board games and watching movies, many of which take on neomedieval themes. After many years of engaging with these elements, I have learned a great deal about neomedievalism before truly realizing what it even was. I have now become more aware of the elements of neomedievalism that bleed into a large portion of modern entertainment.
I specialize in artwork and design, meaning I create many game maps and visuals. I also worked with a majority of the symbolism throughout the game design. Within the maps of the game, I used a mixture of techniques to display various aspects of the land of Kinslic and individual towns within. As I created the maps, I chose to both realistic mapping and symbolism to represent both geography and weather. The maps are also completely hand-drawn. The symbolism within the maps as well as the hand-drawn quality is a tribute to medieval map-making and the mapping style of many of the original neomedieval-style board games, such as Dungeons and Dragons. Overall, my contribution to the game largely involved physical world building and design.
