Music & Communication for Emmi Aid Compilation - Various Artists
Track 55 – Video editing and communication design for the Emmi Aid compilation by Martin Hosbach.
I had the opportunity to participate both musically and visually in this compilation initiated by EMMAUSWALD BLEIBT!, where 57 musicians and bands contributed original or previously unreleased tracks to support the Emmauswald, which is threatened by deforestation — a musical wake-up call to save Berlin-Neukölln’s largest woodland.
My contribution includes Track 55, composed and produced by Sylvain Deletang and myself under the name of kongens nytorv; a music video for “Karl der Käfer” by Die Jünger Emmaus feat. Der Endziffer 0 Chor, featuring drawings by illustrator Elias Hauck, I developed the motion design of the clip and animated the original drawings in After Effects to create a visualizer, bringing the illustrations to life in rhythm with the music; and the creation of communication materials for social media.
Toby Cornish, my supervisor at Jutojo, filmed a reinterpretation of the Pet Shop Boys’ track “The Way Through the Woods” on 16mm in the Emmauswald. The film was processed by hand using a natural developer brewed from leaves gathered in the forest. I created the title sequences for the video.
I was also responsible for the sound recording of a special performance created for the compilation. When we contacted musicians for EMMI AID, pianist Kai Schumacher (from the Ruhr region) proposed a different idea: to perform an excerpt from Steve Reich’s minimalist piece Music for Pieces of Wood using wood collected directly from the Emmauswald.
Sebastian Deufel, Elif Dimli, Sophie Labrey, Kai Schumacher, and Marie Westphal performed the piece in September. Toby Cornish filmed the performance, and I handled the sound recording.
