Credits & Title Design - Call Me Queen
Handwriting title sequences for "Call Me Queen" by Emily Atef - Adapted from Lara Santoro’s 2007 novel Mercy, the film depicts a friendship between an Irish journalist in Kenya and a Rwandan woman, who pair up to combat the AIDS crisis in the 1990s.
For this project, the idea was to create end credits that would directly reflect the film’s central theme: protest and collective action. I hand-lettered the name of each person featured in the credits, using a marker-on-tracing-paper technique inspired by the look of protest signs. These handwritten elements were then layered over scanned pieces of cardboard to reinforce the handmade, demonstrative aesthetic.
Throughout the sequence, short excerpts of protest footage occasionally appear between the names, bringing movement and energy to the signs while maintaining a strong connection to the film’s subject matter.
In terms of color, I drew inspiration both from the palette already present in the film and from traditional Kenyan textiles, particularly kanga fabrics, whose vibrant colors and visual richness helped shape the overall atmosphere of the credits.
