The thirteenth edition of the international festival of contemporary and intermedia arts IZIS, organized by the Cultural and Educational Association PiNA, began on Friday, October 17, and ran until Sunday, November 2. The festival traces its origins to 2013, when an initiative of artists, cultural producers, and poets from Istria came together, and over the years it expanded into cinemas, galleries, public spaces, and industrial venues. Through the lens of included artworks, the festival explored the impact of technology on culture, society, and nature, presenting internationally recognized audio-visual and new media art; past editions have carried titles such as Samo nadzor, Osnovni delci, Cevi, and Fuck Off Illusion. This year, the festival took place across several venues in Koper – Galerija Loža, the gallery of Gravisi-Buttorai Palace, Bastion fortress, and freestanding containers on the viewpoint above Bastion – and is titled End of Message / Konec sporočila / Fine del Messaggio. The festival’s theme explores informational noise and the (in)capacity for communication in the age of communication capitalism, where messages often remain without an intended recipient, are manipulated, or reproduced by machines and artificial intelligence. It examines broken, interrupted, and manipulated communication, the influence of new media, algorithms, and generative AI on how we understand the world, and highlights the material and ecological consequences of mass information production, from electronic waste to the carbon footprint of infrastructure.
