These resources were designed for students in the Adult Migrant English Program. However, they may be utilised by any ESOL teacher. They are designed to address the employment and settlement needs of new arrivals to Australia by giving them an understanding of different skills and qualities required by people in the emergency services, as well as a virtual tour of the workplace. In addition, they assist new arrivals to learn about the police in Australia, fire safety in the home, and what to expect when you call 000.
There are three virtual tours encompassing NSW Police, Fire & Rescue NSW, 000 Call Takers, and Paramedics (NSW Ambulance).
All modules were created by Navitas English and are proudly supported by all arms of the emergency services, and their logos have been used with permission.
All images are either privately owned or used with permission from NSW Police, NSW Fire & Rescue, and NSW Ambulance.
Please respect the copyright and IP of these resources, which belongs to Navitas English.
Combining employment with settlement, these resources are designed to provide students with an immersive experience of three workplaces within the emergency services of NSW. These are:
A Day in the life of NSW Ambulance employees: a 000 call taker, a dispatch officer & a paramedic (CSWE Level 1, and CSWE Level 2/3)
A Day in the life of a NSW Fire & Rescue Firefighter (CSWE Level 1, and CSWE Level 2/3)
A Day in the life a NSW Police Officer (CSWE Level 1, and CSWE Level 2/3)
Each lesson comes with a virtual tour that can be accessed on any device (see tour instructions), a set of Google Slides, a resource pack for students, and teacher notes. Teachers will need to make a copy of the materials. This will allow teachers to make changes, in accordance with the copyright notice. You cannot make changes to the VR tour.
To access the tours, students need to enter a short link on their phones or computers. Theses short links are in the instructions on each Google Slide. They are:
NSW Ambulance Level 1: bit.ly/vr000
NSW Ambulance Level 2/3: bit.ly/000vr
NSW Fire & Rescue Level 1: bit.ly/vrfire1
NSW Fire & Rescue Level 2/3: bit.ly/firevr
NSW Police Level 1: bit.ly/vrpolice
NSW Police Level 2/3: bit.ly/policevr
There are a total of 6 tours in this series, 3 for each level.
There are two ways for students to experience the tours.
NB: You MUST use Google Chrome browser to access the tours.
1. In VR (immersive)
Students will need VR viewers, their phones, and a set of headphones. If using an iPhone, students MUST use Safari.
Type the short bitlink for each tour into the phones, tap the gear wheel to "turn narration on", and then tap the cardboard icon. Turn the phone on its side and put into the VR box. Students are ready to go.
2. On a laptop/desktop/tablet (360 experience, non immersive)
Students type the bitlink into Google Chrome, select "turn narration on" from the gear wheel, and use their mouse/trackpad to drag the screen around.
The tours contain "sights" or hotspots. These are a circle with an "i" in the centre. If using VR boxes, students press the button on the top right of their boxes and the audio will play. To stop the audio at any time, simply press the button again.
On a laptop etc. simply click on the sight. A list of all sights will appear for each image.
It is not possible to pause the audio. For this reason, the audio is kept short.
Instructions are also in all the teacher slides, and teacher notes.
The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training.
