A Quick Study on the Differences Between Purpose, Calling and Assignment
Nah, For Real. Why Am I Here?
You ever asked yourself that question? Ever wondered what you were created for? We hear people discuss “purpose” and how to find yours - you know, the thing you were put here on Earth for? People often use the terms purpose, calling and assignment interchangeably, but what if I told you they weren’t the same thing? Let’s explore this idea real quick.
Purpose.
Humans were created for relationship and for worship. This is the purpose for every human’s existence. We were given free will to be able to make decisions for ourselves, but God created us so that He could commune with us. While we are here, we are to share His love with everyone we come in contact with, so that all can see the connection to our Heavenly Father.
In the beginning, the idea was for us to live forever in the Garden with God, talking to Him daily. Because of sin, we were tossed from the Garden and from God’s presence with our punishment. God, in his omniscient wisdom, had already created a contingency plan for us to be returned to Him: Jesus. Now that the plan has been completed and we have access to be in God’s presence again, and we can commune with Him daily once again, we can begin to fulfill our original purpose: to be with our Creator.
Calling.
The thing that “lights you up”. The thing that directs your life - working with disadvantaged youth, or people who are displaced or the elderly, for example. All of the work or projects that you do tend to point in a particular direction, or toward a certain group of people. This usually doesn’t change.
We are each called to a particular line of work, and when we engage and look within ourselves to discover it, it is usually in service to others in some way, shape or form. How we fulfill the calling is where things get interesting! This is where all of the different jobs, companies, non-profit organizations and even community service comes in! Take some time to discover and discern what your calling is, and find a way to get plugged in!
Assignment.
Like in school, assignments change and accomplish a specific thing. Your assignments could be to specific people or to aid a specific location, like a particular church or school or organization. Sometimes an assignment can be about you instead of serving others for a time. For example, you could be assigned to a company to learn a certain skill that will be used to serve others at a later time (which would be a different assignment).
As Kingdom people, we need to get familiar with our assignments and the time or season they are attached to. Just like seasons change, our assignments have an activation period. Sometimes we get to see the results of our assignments and sometimes we only get assigned to a small portion of the picture or process, so we don’t get to see the final product. They say sometimes we plant the seeds and someone else is assigned to water them. Again, just like in school, our assignments don’t last forever! Once we complete it, we move on to the next one we’re assigned.
Our assignments and our calling, like our purpose, will bring honor and glory to our Heavenly Father. The former two help us and others to learn things about God, like the way He loves, or His grace that never runs out, or about His character, just to name a few. All of these things that we learn about God, lead us to worship Him in gratitude, thereby allowing us to fulfill our original purpose for being here: to worship!
