There are over 700 Firewise Communities in California. San Diego County currently has 4 with 3 of them approved in the last 6 months.
A Firewise Community works collaboratively to address the risks from wildfire that the community experiences. Communities may see these benefits as a result:

1. Form a Firewise Committee
Create a Committee of members of the community. This could include members from fire departments, emergency managers, or residents. Emerald Heights HOA has created a committee of homeowners.
2. Conduct a Wildfire Risk Assessment
In partnership with the state liaison, complete a study of the neighborhood that reviews risk factors. Those risk factors include building construction; brush management, landscaping practices; and evacuation routes. The Assessment is to be completed every 5 years.
3. Develop an Action Plan
Create a 3 year action plan to address risks identified in the Wildfire Assessment.
4. Conduct Educational Outreach
Host educational event to the community that encourages neighborhood participating in wildfire risk mitigation efforts. These are annual events.
5. Meet Volunteer Hour Requirements
Emerald Heights need to reach 691 Volunteer Hours or the monetary equivalent each year.
