Natural Badness
Natural Badness
I'm currently working on a DFG funded project (2020 - 2025) on the nature of suffering and its role in virtue ethics. The core ideas I'm pursuing are:
Suffering consists in being forced to endure the unendurable. My account draws heavily on Simone Weil's writings.
If taken as "negative telos", suffering can help us fill out the working ways of moral virtues, better than accounts of positive teloi can.
Being able to see and to bear seeing suffering is one of the most important and difficult virtues and an essential component of practical wisdom.
I'm also a member of the DFG network "Feeling and Understanding".
