These are not Elwood School District activities. The sponsoring agencies are independent of the School District, and the School District is therefore not responsible for supervision of students participating in these activities neither before, during or after these activities.
BE THE BEST SPORT
Be The Best Sport is a 501c (3) organization focused on the athletic development of children with developmental and physical needs. Our mission is to create adaptive sports and recreational programs for children and young adults with special needs ages 18 and younger. Be The Best Sport seeks to provide our "athletes" with the ability to learn and participate in sport and recreational activities, at their own pace, in a non‐competitive atmosphere, while having fun and meeting new friends.
At Be The Best Sport we offer a variety of sports and programs that focus on exposing the children to the world of sports and to help develop and strengthen their motor, cognitive, and social skills. Our athletes have the opportunity to learn the basics of each sport, through a hands‐on multi‐sensory approach. The program helps facilitate the building of sport skills, confidence, self‐esteem, and sportsmanship, while meeting the needs of each individual. Our motto is to "Have FUN, make FRIENDS and always leave with a SMILE" and is what motivates us each week to provide a great experience that our athletes will remember for a lifetime. We encourage you to visit our website at www.BeTheBestSport.org for more information on the programs we offer and see some our athletes in action.
Currently, we are based in Nassau County in Port Washington and service 75+ athletes per week, but we will begin offering classes at The Sports Arena in St. James to fulfill demand in Suffolk County. Classes at the Sports Arena will be offered Monday‐Thursday afternoons 4:00‐5:30 and Saturdays 5‐7pm. Our classes are staffed with instructors who have experience in Special Ed and Adaptive Physical Ed. We encourage you to come and see one of our classes or refer anyone who you feel would be interested in participating.

Lacrosse for kids with special needs
Challenger League - South Shore's mission is to establish a lacrosse program for people with both physical and cognitive disabilities. Our objective is to foster, promote and encourage sportsmanship, teamwork and friendship through the sport of lacrosse.
While striving for these goals our athletes will develop social skills and increase self-esteem. Finally, it is our intention to increase community awareness and sponsorship for our program and for people with special needs.
Based out of Bay Shore and our program is open to all individuals with special need ages 5 and up. Our 2014 season starts Saturday, May 17 and will continue through July (so long as weather permits). Practices and games will be held on Saturdays though we may enter some travel tournaments but that will depend on demand.

YDA - YOUTH DIRECTIONS AND ALTERNATIVES
Youth Directions and Alternatives (YDA) is a private, non-profit community and youth agency serving youth and their families in the school district of Elwood, Harborfields, and Northport/East Northport. The YDA is for all youth. We do not limit our activities to the gifted or the disadvantaged.
YDA programs emphasize the positive development of youth. Our professional staff acts as facilitators and enablers who believe that youth can do things for themselves if given the opportunity and support. Youth are encouraged to plan, implement, and evaluate their own projects under adult guidance. By incorporating this philosophy of Youth Development into our programs, youth learn valuable life-planning skills and healthy attitudes needed for a productive and happy adulthood.
