Land Acknowledgement
Prior to the invasion of settlers, the Luckiamute Band of the Kalapuya people lived in what is now considered Fort Hoskins Historic Park. The U.S. military established Fort Hoskins in the 1860s with the goal of monitoring a new reservation in the area (therighttrail.org). Though signage at the park tells a story of the Luckiamute people "ceding" their lands to settlers, the presence of the military actually resulted in the dispossession and displacement of the Kalapuya people, ultimately removing them from their homeland.
