Useful Art, Art as Practical Philosophy, De-internalization, and Maieutics of the Self
Vox Clamantis in Deserto stems from the urgent need to overcome the aestheticizing drift of contemporary performance art in order to restore ethical and political responsibility, as well as a concrete purpose, to the artistic act. Drawing upon the legacy of Useful Art (Arte de Conducta) theorized by Tania Bruguera, the work rejects the logic of exhibition and visual consumption, establishing itself instead as a relational device for real transformation.
Immersed in a bubble of perceptual violence that flattens any capacity for sedimentation—transforming life into a non-dwelling—Vox Clamantis reclaims performance art as a space of resistance, duration, and generative emptiness. It is an invitation to re-enter kairos, opposing hyper-connectivity and hyper-productivity to seek, in the words of Byung-Chul Han, the scent of time.
A true maieutics of the self cannot take place within pre-established cognitive frameworks. It demands a radical gesture of liberation: the de-internalization of social, inherited, and self-imposed superstructures. It is an epistemology of performance art methodology that explores how the individual can deactivate the automatism of performance and discover what remains of their own desire and voice once stripped of the imperatives of the ego.
Art thus ceases to produce simulacra and becomes an applied philosophical tool. In the footsteps of Hadot, Simone Weil, and Heidegger, the work searches for Western philosophy's lost practical tradition to restore human experience to its deep, cathartic, and relational dimension, capable of "re-enchanting the world".
"Everyone can be a master: I have learned far more by watching a Eurasian jay and losing the focus of my reading than from the redundant echoing of agitated minds hungry for recognition."
