  1. Brainstorm some word work activities you could do based on this book. Include activities for spelling, vocabulary, grammar and handwriting.

Spelling:

  • Take words off the word map and write them out to put them on a word wall

  • Could choose some words from the book to add to weekly personal spelling practice/test

Vocabulary:

  • Make a class word map together

  • Add words from the book

  • Definitions for new words found in the book

Grammar:

  • Talk about the butterflies in your tummy metaphor

  • Acknowledge and point out the narrative points in the book

Handwriting:

  • Write a story about a time you had butterflies in your tummy.

  • Write a story about relationships and special people in your life.

** All these activities could go hand in hand and work with each other to make a larger activity **



2. Choose one or two ideas and further develop into a classroom activity. Try to include multiple literacy modes in the activity - reading, writing, talking, listening, representing and viewing.

In your description include the grade the lesson is for, the outcomes from the curriculum you would be working on, notes about differentiation and a detailed description of what the students and teachers would do.

Write a Story about A time you had Butterflies in your Tummy OR Write a story about relationships and special people in your life

- Students will do a groups discussion about the butterflies in their tummy metaphor from the story as well as the different people in Swift Fox’s life

- They will talk about some keywords as well as metaphors so they know to include those in their personal story

- They will be given the choice to write about one of the topics listed above
