Formative Assessment for Writing

Read the three samples of writing provided on our UR Courses page.
Only look at the first sample in each pdf.
For each piece:
a. Identify qualities in the writing. What is this student able to do? What do you notice?
b. Identify an Area of Growth, provide and explanation for this decision
Sample 1
Grade 2 - First story
a) -student is able to retell a story, with basic details.
b) -this student could work on capital letters and periods
Finger spaces
Different sentence starters
Letter size (might help if they were given paper with bigger lines and a center dotted line for visual)
Sample 2
Grade 4 - First story
a. - good amount of detail, and ideas
b. - there isn't much flow to the sentence and paragraph structure
- idea is too big for his short story
- pick one idea and focus more on it than all over
Sample 3
Grade 7 - Second Story
a) - informative
-Stays on topic
-knowledge is there, they have the right idea but could use a bit more resources to look up info
-descriptive words
b) - they are struggling with tenses
Spelling could use some work

For one piece:
c. Provide a specific learning experience (mini-lesson) you would use to support this student
d. The learning experience should include a detailed account of how you would teach it.
· What materials will you need?
· What will you say?
· How will you model the experience?
· Remember to reference the source of the learning experience
· Please do not simply use a worksheet
