Paul is an inorganic coordination chemist with significant interests in the photophysics and photochemistry of coordination compounds. He started his academic career obtaining his MChem Chemistry from the University of York (2001) before moving to the University of Sheffield to commence research for his PhD (2005) on iridium-catalysed methanol carbonylation working with Dr Tony Haynes. He then returned to York to conduct postdoctoral research on application of parahydrogen-induced polarisation in NMR spectroscopy working with Prof Simon Duckett (2004-2007). He joined the University of Huddersfield in 2007 and is now Associate Dean (International) of the School of Applied Sciences having obtained his chair in 2018.
