While the 91km drive was not far, it took 5 hours to cover as we stopped numerous times for site viewing plus the sand was getting thicker the further we ventured into the Kgalagadi. We stopped at the campsite that Mike had booked to find someone else had already claimed it and they were not going to give it up. We therefore moved on to another Pan and claimed a lovely campsite.
At about 02h00 I woke up and needed to pee. I first shone my spotlight over the camp site and the surrounding area to check for wildlife and/or the reflection of eyes. This must have woken the other guys as we all ended up climbing down from our rooftop tents and peeing next to our vehicles. We all climbed back into our rooftop tents and before I could finish zipping the door shut, there was a huge roar. The hairs on my neck stood up and I got goose-bumps. Everyone switched their torches on and pointed in the direction of the roar. A lioness strolled past my vehicle, through our campsite and disappeared into the darkness. The lioness must have seen us peeing. What an absolutely awesome experience.
