About Me
About Me
Welcome to my corner of the web! I am a post-doc at Utah State University. I recently earned my PhD at Virginia Tech, and was co-advised by Dr. Sean Bemis and Dr. Jim Spotila. My research focuses on the structural and tectonic evolution of active fault systems and how earthquakes shape the upper crust.
My dissertation integrated paleoseismic, structural, and geospatial approaches to investigate fault behavior across tectonic settings. One project focused on the Western Nepal fault system, using paleoseismic trenching and chronologic modeling (OxCal) to reconstruct the timing and extent of Holocene surface-rupturing earthquakes in the Himalaya. The other explored the Eastern California Shear Zone, and specifically how preexisting crustal weaknesses, such as the Independence Dike Swarm, affect patterns of off-fault deformation and fault zone architecture. Ultimately, my research goals seek to contribute to a better understanding of earthquake and fault behavior. Check out more details on my Research page!
Beyond research, I’m passionate about science education and outreach. Under the guidance of Dr. Julia Cisneros and alongside a team of graduate students, I helped design and lead the first Geosciences Camp @ VT, a summer program that introduces middle school students to geoscience through hands-on activities. A main goal of mine is to bridge the gap between research and real-world impact, finding ways for communities to not only withstand, but thrive alongside, the geologic hazards that shape our planet.
Beyond this, I love fantasy worlds, my dog and cat, books, video games, and Dungeons & Dragons - all of which inspire how I teach and communicate science: with imagination and curiosity.

Volunteering and outreach
Virginia Tech Geosciences Camp (2025) – Helped design and lead the first Geosciences Camp for middle school students alongside Dr. Julia Cisneros and a team of graduate students. Developed inquiry-based activities that introduced students to geologic hazards, mapping, and fieldwork.
Montgomery County Public Schools Field Trip (2024) – Assisted with a geology field trip for local 8th-grade students, guiding observations and discussions about regional rock formations and geologic processes.
Letters to a Pre-Scientist (2022–2023) – Served as a STEM professional pen-pal for a middle school student, sharing experiences in geoscience research and career development over the academic year.
Department Outreach Events (2018–2020) –
Volunteered at outreach booths for both Virginia Tech and Central Washington University.
Demonstrated volcanic eruptions at STEM Night (2018 & 2019) and Expand Your Horizons (2019), engaging middle school girls and undeclared undergraduates in geoscience demonstrations.
Designed and led a Pet Rock activity for children during the university’s Boo Central (2019) event.
Organized the Potential Graduate Students Visit (2019) at Central Washington University, planning and hosting activities to welcome visiting students.
Teaching, Mentoring, and Outreach Recognition
Teaching, Mentoring, and Outreach Recognition
My teaching and outreach experiences span classroom instruction, field education, and international learning environments. I’m committed to creating inclusive, engaging spaces for students to explore geoscience both inside and outside the classroom.
Teaching Assistant, Virginia Tech Switzerland Study Abroad Program (Fall 2025) – Coordinating and supporting undergraduate field courses across Switzerland and Italy, including field logistics, student mentoring, and facilitation of on-site learning experiences.
Virginia Tech Department of Geosciences Tillman Award for Outstanding Teaching in Upper-Level Courses (2024) – Recognized for excellence in teaching and mentoring within advanced geoscience courses.
Central Washington University Department of Geological Sciences Dedication to Geological Service and Outreach by a Graduate Student Award (2020) – Honored for leadership in public outreach, student mentorship, and community engagement in the geosciences.
I am a bit obsessed with my pets and have a big love for animals so I had to include some of my favorite photos.
