This project explores the history of artists using copyrighted materials in their art. One of the first uses of appropriated materials is Joseph Cornell’s 1936 film, Rose Hobart. As technology advances to allow people at home to “borrow” media that enters their homes through television and radio, giving rise to groups such as Emergency Broadcast Network and Negativland with varying legal outcomes. The work of Joseph Cornell, Emergency Broadcast Network, and Negativland would serve as a precursor to the rise of YouTube, where anyone with a computer can create and upload remixes and video collages. YouTube has implemented Content ID with varying degrees of success. Is Content ID really the solution to our information-saturated world?
