The SCI-PET (Socioeconomic and Climate Inequality: emissions, impacts and perceptions to design Policy for an Equitable Transition) project aims to deliver groundbreaking insights into the complex climate change–economic inequality nexus by addressing the climate inequality triplet—inequality in emissions, climate impacts, and policy effects—within a unified framework. Large economic disparities and global warming are two of the most pressing policy challenges of the 21st century, and SCI-PET recognises that these issues cannot be addressed in isolation, as multiple feedback loops between inequality and climate change may lead to a vicious cycle within the earth-economic system.
The project will address the distribution of emissions—the drivers of climate change—and the unequal impacts of climate-related events, while uncovering the mechanisms behind these disparities. In particular, SCI-PET will develop a unified framework to quantify how wealthier societal segments disproportionately contribute to climate impacts on poorer households. Critically, SCI-PET will extract public perceptions of climate change and support for mitigation and adaptation policies, as well as their distributional implications, which may create challenges for policy design and implementation.
By combining econometric analysis, qualitative and quantitative surveys, and information provision experiments, SCI-PET will develop an integrated approach to expand knowledge in this field. Focusing on Italy and Norway, the project will generate robust comparative insights and provide evidence to support a just transition, advancing the academic debate on the climate–inequality nexus and informing more equitable climate policies.
