"TRUE CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS" VOL.3, YEAR 2023 (PAG.71-78)
Elena Dunaeva's art is an explosion of magic, halfway between fairy tale and mystery, a kaleidoscope of emotions, lights, feelings, nature and perceptions of the soul that become works to be admired. Elena Dunaeva draws heavily on the art of the past to revisit works by famous masters of art history, modulating different strokes and colors, lights and shadows in order to provide new interpretations and different interpretations. The artist loves to deconstruct the present, to segment the world into many pieces of a puzzle that she prefers to assemble with new forms.
A way in which the artist proposes different worlds, in which man is led back to respect for the environment and nature, but also to the spiritual aspect, forgotten for too long in pursuit of the hedonism promulgated by progress unrestrained. On the contrary, Elena Dunaeva proposes the figure of thinking human beings, endowed with heart and soul, worlds different from ours in which feelings prevail over the fashions of a contemporary society which, instead, transforms the selfish and the careerists into heroes.
In the fashion of winning at any cost, Dunaeva juxtaposes the sophistication of nature and a panorama. To the unbridled race to accumulate material wealth, the artist places music in front of it, with instruments and scores, nourishment for the soul, mind and spirit. Elena Dunaeva's art is made up of bright colors, with which the artist demonstrates her ability to enhance light to conform it to her poetic messages. The sun kisses everything with its fiery rays and in the works of Elena Dunaeva it symbolizes the divine creator of infinity. The warmth of the sun is the caress that allows life, that generates the harvest, that stimulates smiles.
Elena Dunaeva's painting is a demonstration of technical competence and a fervent creative expression which is reflected on the canvases with graces, a sense of color and a suggestive and captivating use of perspective. Each work by Elena Dunaeva denotes reflection and a reasoned construction which, however, is not a slave to categorical constraints, but is carried out through the impetus of the need to paint, like a liberation that the artist lets generate by herself in the catharsis of creation. The love for animals and for nature, the attraction for light and for the vastness of creation, as well as the reference to music and the beauty of art, are all elements that demonstrate how Elena Dunaeva is an artist of light and refinement, who knows how to tell his vision of the world made of feelings, emotions and lots of color.

« The Healing Sorceress.»
Today we meet Elena Dunaeva, a professional painter living in Italy. She started her career at 50 years old which is a great reminder to us to never stop reaching for what we like. Her works are like potions that heals you from the toughness of everyday life, they warm you emotionally. We are glad to have her share her journey here as an artist and as a wonderful human being.
Can you talk a bit about yourself? Did you come from an artistic background/education? What’s your background? How long have you been an artist?
I was born and raised in the Soviet Union, in Russia. I have been drawing since childhood, was noted by many teachers at school, but never studied at specialized art schools. So, in my first 20 years, I drew, studying in the library, using special magazines for art schools, and some of the "tricks" of artists. My dad also taught me some ways of art work, so I always worked on the school design committees, painted posters and other school stuff... It was until about 30 years later (already in Italy) that I finally decided to go to art schools and paint in oil and acrylic on canvas.
What inspired you to choose a professionaltake on becoming an artist?
I sometimes thought about my desire to draw, paint pictures, but I was afraid of something and looked for excuses not to do it, oddly enough. Apparently, I was looking for more real sources of income, a job with a guaranteed salary. But after many years of work away from art, I suddenly decided and started working, with the firm intention of earning decent money with my work. Realizing that I would be recognized only after some time (several years, for example), I took up with great enthusiasm for training and practice, through trial and error, looking for my own style, creating for pleasure and for the joy of people.
Who are the artists that inspired you and helped you on your path? Can you elaborate about what in their works inspired you?
After studying painting with my second mentor (Natalya Bazhenova) in Moscow, I decided to try my hand at abstraction. I am especially attracted to cubism and surrealism, but I also like impressionism and figurative art. In this regard, I can say that I am inspired by the paintings of such masters as Mikhail Vrubel, Konstantin Korovin, Claude Monet, Salvador Dalí, Gino Severini, Robert Delaunay, Paul Klee and many others. Therefore, in my paintings you can see the fusion of impressionism with cubo-futurism.
What other interests or aspects of your life influence your art? (your environment, hobbies..)
I think that in my character and outlook on life there is part of the influence on my work. Positive thinking and love for all living things is my favorite topic. I love all kinds of arts, from an early age, I was involved in singing, dancing, even a bit of theater. I love nature and beauty in all its manifestations. Living in Italy, of course, I fell under the influence of its nature, architecture and art. Not only do I live in the country of the great geniuses of art, Ilive on Leonardo da Vinci Street! I think that says it all! (laughing)
We can feel the positive energy and vibes through the warm colors of your paintings. Have you ever thought about taking a very different route in your artistic career? Maybe trying a different medium or taking a different vibe/message for your art?
I assume that I will alternate and constantly change art materials and tools. I can change the medium of art, but it will always be painting with a positive attitude and energy. I am currently starting a new form of visual art, I mean a very modern painting technique, without canvas and paint... I think you have heard of digital art. I assume that after training, I will alternate different techniques and media, always remaining true to my credo: beauty and love heal the soul, so I must bring harmony, beauty and love to the world, glorify nature and its colorful variety.
What do you hope to achieve for the ones who look at your art? What do you want them to feel or to think while looking at your work?
I would really like my viewer to see the beauty and feel the energy of nature, the energy of my positive mood, the mood of the characters in my paintings, so that people smile and their mood improves. I would like my paintings to be a talisman that brings good luck to the owner of the painting and all its viewers. I recently started a series of paintings where I depict real people (even if most often they are invented by me) in an unreal world, my own world of beauty, peace and love, where there is only happiness and joy, where there is no place for evil in any form . Therefore, I believe that these paintings can be a refuge for many people who are tired of negativity and are looking for beauty inlife. I invite everyone to visit my magical land through my paintings.
You have done some exhibitions before, can you talk a bit about them? How did you feel during your first exhibition when you looked at your work being exposed in a gallery?
I organized my first solo exhibition myself, it went very well, which gave me even more confidence that I was going in the right direction. When my paintings began to be exhibited at other collective exhibitions, I tried to always be present at the presentation (at the opening) and then communicate with colleagues and outside viewers. It is always very nice to hear kind words and compliments, to understand that my message reached the goal and people understood my creative line. Of course, I proudly introduce myself and tell people about the history of my painting, they appreciate it.
At the moment I have a decent number of exhibitions all over Italy and in Russia (for obvious reasons, in Russia only online, at the moment). My presence at these exhibitions is also justified by my passion for travel, in which my husband and son always accompany me.
How is artistic life going for you? Some people can find it lonely at some point and others can find it relaxing, what is your take?
For me, the creation of a picture is the discovery of the world. I am in another dimension and enjoy the process immensely. Often I see that something needs to be corrected and redone in a completely different way, I ruthlessly erase the paint and radically change the picture ... and I see that it turned out exactly what it should have turned out! I believe that my angels guide me and tell me how best to do it. So, for me, it is happiness and endless pleasure to embody on canvas what I did not even dream of, for example, even 5 years ago.
You are a great inspiration in pursuing your dreams no matter how old you can be, can you talk a bit about how do you feel now, years after your decision to paint professionally, as a person who decided to build a new path at 50 years old
My professional experience in painting is estimated at only a few years. Yes, I came to the decision to make the profession of an artist my life's work (as long as the Almighty will allow me) already at the age of 50 years. This December I will be 55 years old and I really hope that my career as a successful and sought-after artist will skyrocket. That is why I am constantly learning (both painting and modern methods of promotion) and I consider it very important to constantly learn and strive for growth, both as a professional and as a person. And those who say that it is never too late to learn are right. And it's never too late to change your life for the better! And I am sure that having embarked on my intended path, even after 50 years, I still came to my calling and destiny, which gives me great satisfaction.
Chuck Close said “Amateurs look for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work” What do you think of that? For you, as a professional artist, what is the place of inspiration in your professional life? What are, in your opinion, the most important elements for creating?
I agree with Chuck Close. For me personally, for a new picture, I just need to find a theme (or the customer gives it to me), I immediately begin to develop it. I always have a lot of ideas in my head, I periodically write them down, but I don’t have time to implement them in time. Therefore, inspiration is almost always present for me, it’s just that there are other things that require time and attention, so paintings sometimes wait in the wings for quite a long time. But when I’m busy painting, I lose the sense of time and I’m very reluctant to tear myself away from this activity ... I’ll add that often with painting, it’s like with appetite: appetite comes with eating, that is, it’s worth starting and I can’t break away....
What are your current goals now? and in the next 10 years; what would you hope to achieve?
My plans for the next 10 years are: to grow in the skill of painting and knowledge of art history, to become in demand on the art market, a favorite of the public, and also to become the best organizer of exhibitions for myself and other artists, to open my own gallery. Unite artists, poets and musicians into single clubs and organize joint cultural events around the world as often as possible. Show myself in this world as a kind of good sorceress who helps people and myself to improve life and karma.

"I VERI ARTISTI CONTEMPORANEI" VOL.3, ANNO 2023 (PAG.71-78)

Criticism of the art of Elena Dunaeva
Elena Dunaeva's art is a kaleidoscope of colors that draws on the dimensions of reality, the imaginary, magic and fairy tales.
Parallel dimensions that the artist creates with a refined technique and an effective use of light.
Her chromatic syntax deconstructs the figure to recreate it in different forms, in which perceptions have a decisive weight and become the DNA of the new structures.
An art that transcends form and what is within the visual field, to lead to the metaphor of rebirth. Everything, for Dunaeva, can be reborn and transformed, improving itself.
An artist of light and hope who deconstructs the elements of reality to tell her time in detail and to reshape it in a positive way.
An artist who not only expresses himself through a refined technique and a masterful use of color, but who also knows how to tell his story and narrate his points of view on the world.
In her works, in fact, history and philosophy, the most cherished feelings and affections intersect, in a chromatic tale full of suggestions.
And, in Dunaeva's art, music is an element that strengthens concepts and perceptions, giving strength to her works, always animated by vibrant colors and the harmony that is the prerogative of the artistic expression of her language.
Dunaeva's use of light and chromatic effects give life to an original and distinguishable language that winks at Rayism, but with highly personal tones and accents.
Precisely the peculiar language is a fundamental element because it allows the artist to be immediately identified among thousands of others.
Elena Dunaeva is a complete artist, as she expresses concepts and conveys messages through a stylistically defined, refined and identifying language.
