Learn the Essentials of Robotics with LEGO™ SPIKE PRIME
Class Description
Our Robotics 102 course is led by instructors, Ian and Evan. This class builds upon what is taught in Robotics 101, with the focus on more advanced coding techniques that aid in improving consistency and accuracy. Some of these topics include line-following with the color and ultrasonic sensors, in-depth field navigation, usage of all sensors, and some exposure to modification building. This class meets for three hours for three Saturdays in a month. We challenge our students to a high level to make use of all their past and current knowledge of the robot. The goal of all of this is to either create a foundation for future coding endeavors, or to have a better sense of the robotics portion of the FIRST Lego League Competition.
In this class, we use the LEGO Spike Prime robot, which is the successor of the LEGO Ev3 Robot. This new robot is quite similar to the previous, but instead, has more simplified components. All the sensors from the Ev3 are still here, just the overall appearance and materials have been changed to be more friendly for elementary school students. Students will be exposed to more intricate coding concepts that simultaneously make use of several sensors. We highly encourage them to take notes throughout the class as they make new discoveries about programming, or learn from their mistakes as they are completing challenges. One of the main key concepts we will teach students is line-following. This code algorithm combines the use of the ultrasonic and color sensor to follow black and white lines found around the field. The combined use of the sensors helps to reduce the lack of accuracy gained from using simple movement blocks. Line-following is an essential part to completing missions, and will be the focus of class two and three when students will be asked to complete a series of navigation challenges.
Course Topics
Develop an understanding of the SPIKE PRIME’s hardware and software
