Our next newsletter will be released in late July or early August and will include upcoming professional development opportunities, potential book study selections, and insightful ideas and research to help you kick off the new school year with success.
In the meantime, we hope you take this well-deserved break to unwind, enjoy some good books, turn off the alarm clock, and recharge. Wishing you a restful and rejuvenating summer!😎

Our collaboration with the Service Centers across the state to provide ELA and Structured Literacy professional development sessions has been temporarily paused due to the loss of ESSER funding. KSDE Is currently working on an appeal to restore this funding and our shared goal is to continue progressing Standards Alignment work. Rescheduled dates and registration links will be shared as soon as they are finalized. Should ESSER funding be restored, we will reassess and reallocate those funds to support and accelerate these efforts.
You asked. We listened! KSDE has developed a Comprehensive Website to assist districts and schools in effectively implementing the Four Fundamentals. To support this important work, KSDE has dedicated resources to creating:
Toolkits
Guidance documents
Professional Learning opportunities
Support systems
In addition, we are excited to share that we have posted observation tools under the Quality Instruction tab. This includes KSDE Observation Tools for ELA, mathematics, and science, with early literacy coming soon. The tools prioritize both teacher actions and student impact with teacher- and student-facing look-fors for quality instruction. The tools also include a one-pager of all indicators followed by note-taking pages. These are not designed to be used as an evaluation tool, but more of an observation/coaching tool.
As you are considering these resources, they reflect a Version #1. We anticipate updating and making small revisions based on feedback this fall. We encourage you to keep that in mind as you are making plans for instructional improvement using these tools. Also, while the tools are important, we also recognize the importance of professional learning on the tools and how to best leverage them later this summer into the next school year. More information about professional learning related to the tools will be shared later.
The ELA Standards Toolkit has been updated to show the corrected version of the Writing Tenets! Please use this version when referencing the Writing Tenets on page 13 of the document or CLICK on the Writing Menu above.
Tip to Open: If you are struggling to open the links inside the document, try downloading the PDF document onto your device. You can also try this direct link : English Language Arts Standards Alignment Toolkit
The toolkit can be used to help your teams and districts with vertically alignment of the standards (page 9). In addition to analyzing standards by grade level, teachers and teams should also break down standards to best understand learning targets, learning progressions, w as well as potential vocabulary students need to understand for each particular standard. An example of a break down of standards is found on page 12 with Writing Standards 1-3: Text Types and Purposes.
Help spread the news! Make sure you and your colleagues are signed up to receive the updated ELA information, professional development opportunities, and guidance documents each month.
