I have been a singer-songwriter for almost 2 years now and still the most exciting part of my life is having to write new songs. I never grew tired of it continued to work on my passion for most of that 2 years. I was known as the artist who only write songs about heartbreak and delusion, nothing else. Despite that, my first ever song written was done with a ukulele with only the C, G, Am, F chords. It talked about losing oneself in messy household I grew up in. I wrote and sang it last 2020 with only a Samsung earphones' mic that have noise cancellation and my trusty DAW called Bandlab (which I thought automatically beautifies my horrific vocals) and by that time, that was the only song I ever did before picking up my parents' 10 year old acoustic guitar 2 years ago. During 2022 I still wrote songs using my ukulele but also tried writing songs with my cheap MIDI keyboard that have a hard time connecting with my laptop. I gave up easily and just stuck with the acoustic guitar writing originals. A little lore about me was that I wrote original songs first before learning cover songs as people teased me for being out of tune. I thought that if I wrote my own songs, they won't notice what note is right and what is not. I was wrong though. Around 2023, I tried recording vocals again on my old laptop but this time with a mic. My first mic was a BM800 condenser mic which I think most producers or streamers know that it isn't a good mic but at that moment I really thought it was a good idea to use the mic in an online show where I have to sing with my minus 1 song. It did not go well when I learned that my vocals were trying to overlap and fade with the music like they are fighting who's going to be heard.
Even though I know my passion won't lead to a successful career, I enjoy what I do especially when people listen to the songs I write. It's funny, I think I like performing because I was receiving the smiles I once wished growing up. Although I hate being labeled as the artist that only writes heartbreak songs, it never really stopped me. I wrote a love song for the first time in awhile back in April 2025. Not a love song that is pure delusional just like the ones I wrote. Not a love song of what I think it's like to have someone love me back. Not a love song about a crush not even noticing my presence. It was a love song about being in love with someone and wanting everything all at once in the beginning of the relationship. The only reason I can write that now is that I now know what its like to be genuinely loved and not just from my delusions.
I first wrote the verses of the song last April but just finished the whole song last month of June. All I have to do now is brainstorm the instrumental production, style of recording, and preparing the set-up where I need to record and mix my song. I tried producing one of my songs before as well for an art project but remade it with a real producer when I put it up for release. I'm still not confident with my skills in producing but I know what to record and what audio tracks to adjust. Since I already had experience in producing an intial demo as a graded assignment, I'm already familiar with what's first and what's last which makes things easier to start. However, I expect to learn more skills and my style as a singer-songwriter and a musician throughout this process.
The video on the right side of this part is an acoustic demo of the song I made. I decided to pick this song as I'm really excited to share my experience about being in love and what's it like to be excited about being in love. The song is about being in a romantic relationship where you wish to get married already even though it's still early in the relationship. The video was recorded with just an iPhone 11 with its built-in microphone in the camera app last July 15.
While I have already my equipment, I feel like I still have room for improving it. I plan to buy a new microphone before recording the final project and maybe a pair of headphones. But besides that, the instruments I'll be using is my acoustic guitar and an electric one. My time will probably focus on mixing rather than recording as I have more to learn and explore in mixing and mastering songs but I hope to enjoy the recording time as well.
My production area is located in the corner of our bedroom. As of now, I still live in a small house where me and my sister share our bedroom to save space and for this project, I'll be using 'that corner' where she sets up her crochet stuff. The walls are made out of thick cardboard walls while the whole house is built from cement with no paint including the floor. Our neighborhood isn't as noisy as those who live by streets as my neighborhood is mostly filled with trees and nature. If there is noise around it would probably just be animals and the wind which probably can't reach our room. My area isn't the best right now but I try to ensure to adjust it for better quality.
As of now, I'm still saving up for more equipment especially instruments. Like I said, I might use a different mic before recording my final project so I'll probably just list what I have now first then list those what I might use or replace in the near future.
Right now I only have:
ᯓ✦∘˙ Maono AU-PM471TS USB Condenser Mic (I have this for 2 years now)
ᯓ✦∘˙ Wired unbranded headphones
ᯓ✦∘˙ Asus Vivobook Laptop
ᯓ✦∘˙ Zeus Portable Bluetooth Speaker
For my instruments:
ᯓ✦∘˙ RJ Notre Dame Bowlback Guitar
ᯓ✦∘˙ Electric Guitar
For my DAW, I decided to explore more rather than sticking with BandLab and Audacity but still hasn't decided on which DAW to use. However, I'm leaning onto using Audiotool as it have free samples of different instruments and has a lot of free effects for free. I'm really a fan of synths and effects so I might apply those in my project including my vocals if it fits the style. I can't decide on how to start the production of the song yet but I'll probably use virtual instruments more than my physical ones and explore the plugins more.
Since I have a USB Condenser microphone, I don't need a separate audio interface as I connect my mic directly to my laptop where analog to digital conversion is occured by the USB mic. I've been a fan of USB microphones for some time now but I would probably buy an audio interface some day for a much better quality mic and for my instruments as well. Since I don't have an audio interface now, I'll be recording both my vocals and my physical instruments through my Maono mic that connects to my laptop. I plan on using Audiotool as my DAW where I'll record and mix my song there than my usual Audacity to BandLab process. If all fails, I'll probably just switch back to that but for now I'm really excited trying new DAWs. My motto for this project will probably be "gear isn't everything" because I know what equipment I lack!
One thing about me is that I really like making calendars and scheduling stuff like meetings, postings, and the progress. I've had experience in producing calendars and how they work so I'm excited to produce one. During the first of August, I plan on perfecting and polishing the song while also finding references of styles I'd like to apply. I'll probably also explore recommended plugins and effects from friends I know that make music. For the 2nd week, I'll probably focus more on experimenting the style I want for the song whether it be candy pop, indie-acoustic, or anything I find pleasing. The 3rd and 4th week of August will probably consists of me recording and re-recording stuff until I'm satisfied with what I've done so by the last day of August, the song will be released.
I will be recording throughout the entire process in my area with my own vocals and my own instruments. Although I have an Irig connector for my guitars, I prefer recording them using my microphone as it's more clear and no static. I don't have any effects that I want to apply yet but surely I'll be recording virtual instruments such as drums and keys. Since the aim of my song is to have an upbeat feeling, I'll probably add extra strings or maybe keys.
Right now, I expect to have an audio track of 6:
1 main vocal track
1 backup vocal track
1 harmony vocal track
1 drum track (virtual)
1 acoustic guitar track
1 electric guitar melody track.
I've tasted the bittersweetness of having to put all my effort into making my demo songs sound good only to find it horrific the next day. I probably will focus on this project when I have more time to truly understand and feel the style and music I want to aim. Surely, I don't want to cram this project until the week of the release date as I already know the outcome of that will be me probably deleting the release the week after.
I don't have any confidence that my work will satisfy my ears so I'll probably just release it on YouTube as an 'official demo' instead of releasing it on Spotify where my officials works are. Although I aim to have a good outcome of this project, I doubt it will succeed with my what I wanted as an official release and rather just be a demo as I expect. I'm aware that my skills in music theory and in instruments are not highly to think of but I'm confident that I can release a demo. Hopefully, I can share this with my friends and my organization in UPOU as a step into motivating them to do the same.
Like I said, I doubt I'll have a satisfactory outcome that is pleasing to my ears and that reaches the standard in the music industry but I know I can produce a demo that will satisfy me to pass to be in new production for my next release. I will still exert effort and do my best to produce this the way I want it to be when I officially release it. Hopefully, in the next projects I already have the right equipment and skills to have a better outcome. Because honestly, even though my vocals and instrument skills are quite enough to produce the demo, learning and having the right equipment and skills makes my project better than I want it to be. It also helps if I understand how audio tracks and sound is produce inside the DAW so my ears know what to do with how I make music. Although I think that this project is quite a handful and I'll probably go out of comfortzone (the usual indie genre), I'm still excited to make this work and share it to people who supported my career as a songwriter.
My ARTS1 DEMO PROJECT ⬆️⬆️ (Probably the same quality or better outcome of this project)
