El Sierra Family Bowling

The Tivoli Bowl was full of Bobcats on February 9th during our Family Bowling Event. We had over 60 bowlers plus many of their adoring fans.  In addition to some wacky bowling, the PTA also sponsored a raffle with some fabulous prizes including borrowing Mr. Lynde's chair for the day or picking a song for a whole school dance party! In total, the event raised over $400 to help fund all of the great programs our PTA sponsors like Birthday Books, assemblies, and field day. Thank you for your generosity Bobcats!

Breakfast with Santa

The El Sierra Community welcomed a special guest from the North Pole this December, they even took a special ride on the Polar Express to reach him!  Thank you to everyone who helped organize our yearly Breakfast with Santa. Students and their families had a wonderful time, from the delectable breakfast feast to the thrilling cake walk, fun was had by everyone who attended. Our book fair also raised lots of money to help put even more books into the hands of our eager readers!

Bobcat Dash

The El Sierra Bobcats were able to take a trip through the decades at the 5th annual Bobcat Dash on Friday, October 4th.  Each of the stations during the dash represented a different decade that El Sierra has been open; the school is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.  From doing the hustle at the 70s station to running from a real life Pac Man in the 80s, not only did students have a ton of fun but they got a history lesson as well.  The week leading up to the dash was filled with excitement with different daily dress themes like get your feet ready for the race with crazy socks and dress like the year 3000! Students also spend the week getting ready for the school’s annual Caine’s Arcade.  Caine’s Arcade is a national program that encourages creativity and ingenuity by designing their own arcade games using cardboard materials. While students waited for the dash to begin, their cardboard games were open for business. In addition to all the fun, the Bobcat Dash is also one of the school PTA’s biggest fundraisers with students getting over $10,000 in pledges this year.  Thank you to the organizers, participants, and supporters of this great tradition at El Sierra.

First Annual El Sierra PTA Chili Cook Off Wrap Up

Thank you to everyone who attended our first ever El Sierra PTA Chili Cook Off on Sunday, September 29th. We raised $800 at the event for our fantastic PTA and school. The competition was tough with ten scrumptious chili recipes entering the battle. The judges, all of the attendees, took their job very seriously commenting on the aroma, color, spice, etc. of each chili. When the votes were counted we ended up with a tie between Nathan Wheeler's Bobcat Chili and Mark Thomas' Netflix and Chili. While the voting between chili recipes was tough, everyone agreed that the rest of the event was a blast.  From a Bears' victory playing on the big screen to epic battles in hammerschlagen, we hope even more El Sierra supporters can join us next year! A special thanks goes out to the Cagle family for hosting the event.

9/6/19 El Sierra's 50th Anniversary Celebration

The 50th Anniversary Celebration of El Sierra Elementary School was a smashing success this past Friday, September 6th with over 500 people coming to the event.  Attendees were able to take a tour of the school for the first hour of the event. Former students and staff reminisced about how the building has changed over the years, while current students loved showing off their classrooms, and even future Bobcats enjoyed exploring the rooms they will soon call their own! A large crowd gathered for the unveiling of a time capsule from students in 1993 which included student work, popular magazines, and other neat momentos of Bobcats past.  For the last two hours of the event, attendees were able to enjoy a variety of activities outdoors including sweet treats from an ice cream truck, a bounce house, face painting, a band, a magician, and many community booths. While all of the activities at the event were free to participants, the El Sierra PTA’s Playground Committee did receive donations from generous community members in attendance. If you’d like to help future Bobcats have a safe, fun place to play, you can visit our El Sierra PTA website to learn more. https://sites.google.com/view/el-sierra-pta/ The El Sierra PTA would like to thank all of those attended the event and a special thank you to our community sponsors including Zach Frazier Orthodontics, Breakaway Basketball, Moon Jump, Peter Krouwer, and Lou Malnati’s.

8/12/19 Summer News

Even though school might be out for the summer, El Sierra was still the base for some summer learning and fun.  On July 1st, the Downers Grove Library staff made a special visit to the school. The event included a storytime, crafts, games, and even a delicious ice pop treat.  Many students were able to pick up their summer reading prizes from the library’s annual summer reading program. The school was also the base for an impromptu water balloon battle on July 24th. Organizers spread the word through social media and families arrived with coolers of balloons for battle.  After the fun was done, the participants worked together to ensure that all of the left over balloon pieces were picked up to help keep their school clean. Finally the El Sierra PTA has planned a back to school Menchie’s Fundraiser from August 15th-17th to help families reconnect. What a fun summer for our El Sierra Bobcats!
