Course Description:

Explore Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as image manipulation and design tools. Learn how to use photos from digital cameras and scanned images to create both art and business media. Apply principles of color theory and design to the work you create. Learn how to use drawing programs as illustration tools to create special effects with text and graphics. Discover career and job opportunities that employ skills learned in this class. There is a $10.00 fee for supplies.

CTE Dual Credit Eligible:

This course is CTE Dual Credit (also known as Tech Prep College Connections www.techprepcc.org ) approved and articulated with Bellevue College. Students who demonstrate proficiency of the college course competencies with a ‘B’ (3.0) or better grade may be eligible to earn college credit through the Tech Prep program. Students must register online using the statewide enrollment and reporting system http://sers.techprepwa.org and also are required to pay a non-refundable $50 annual consortium fee to earn college credit through the Tech Prep College Connections program (http://pay.techprepcc.org). Students MUST register for Tech Prep college credit while they are enrolled in the high school course. Students must register for CTE Dual Credit (Tech Prep) credit while they are enrolled in the high school program.

Leadership Opportunities

In addition to opportunities within the classroom, students also have the option to join Technology Student Association (TSA), a national organization of students engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). With a membership of over 233,000 middle and high school students in approximately 2,000 schools spanning 49 states, TSA is supported by educators, parents and business leaders who believe in the need for a technologically literate society. Members learn through exciting competitive events, leadership opportunities and much more. The club meets after school with Adviser Ms. Johns (day and time TBD). Course Objectives:

Students will

• Explain and use the basic operation of the following in Photoshop: menu bar, toolbars and panels, options bar, and workspaces.
• Use Adobe Photoshop to perform the following tasks: combining of two or more images into one finished image, transferring of images between two dissimilar file formats, masking a portion of an image, using image filters to create desired effects, and using layers.
• Explain and use the basic operation of the following in Adobe Illustrator: menu bar, toolbars and panels, options bar, and workspaces.
• Use Adobe Illustrator to perform the following tasks: drawing detailed shapes using the pen tool, creating and using RGB color, grouping images, using gradients to create shading on objects, recognizing tonal changes and shapes to create depth, using transparencies, using stylistic enhancements to create graphically interesting text, using image filters to create desired effects, and using layers.
• Prepare a color image document for printing on a desktop-style printer.
• Combine images of various formats to create a complex, layered design.
• Create a portfolio of original vector- and original raster-based images.

Grading:

Projects and Test: 45%

• Work is not considered turned in until files are placed in the Turn In folder on the student server. It’s always good to keep a back up copy in your own student folder or on a jump drive. A lost or corrupted file means that you will have to start over.
• Projects will be graded and posted at the date due; however, students may complete work for full credit up to a specified date at the end of each grading period, since everyone works at a different pace. You are advised to come in before school, during Nest, or during lunch if you fall behind.
• Students will be tested on the mastery of the pen tool in Illustrator.

Portfolio: 45%

• For each project, we will do an extended assignment to be saved in the Portfolio file, and also copied into the Turn In folder on the student server. This compilation of work will be graded each quarter. The idea of the portfolio is to apply the skills you have learned in a more complex, challenging way. The portfolio projects should be more difficult than the original assignment for the turn in folder.

Final Exam: 10%

We will have a final that employs both Photoshop and Illustrator skills, in addition to your creativity and imagination. You will have about a week to complete the final exam.

Grading Scale:

A = 93-100%

A- = 90-92%

B+ = 88-89%

B = 83-87%

B- = 80-82%

C+ = 78-79%

C = 73-77%

C- = 70-72%

D+ = 68-69%

D = 60-67%

F = 59% and below

Classroom rules:

• Absolutely no food or drink, including water, in the lab.
• Students may only use the computer for Graphic Design 1 work. Students MAY NOT use the computer for playing music, checking e-mail, or “surfing the net.”
• Students may not use the printer in 1413, as it is supplied by the yearbook and journalism budgets and would be in violation of state ASB law.
• Respect yourself, others, and property.
• Be on time and come to class.

Behavioral Consequences:

• Should a student fail to follow the above rules, the result will be a lunch detention, increasing upon each violation to the point of an administrator referral if necessary.
• Tardies: I will follow the school policy regarding tardies and attendance, which you will learn about in handbook talks during Nest.

There is a $10.00 materials fee for this course. This fee will go towards the printing costs of your projects that you will be taking home.
