«Αφού μ’αρέσει να γυρνώ» aims to explore the women’s position in the deeply male-dominated world of folk music idioms in Greece, as reflected in the recordings of 78 gramophone records.
Indeed, the position of women was limited and clearly defined, and the role of the female voice was diminishing in the first two decades after the Greek interwar period.
Through the repertoire of the first half of the 20th century, we discover the lifestyle of women of the time, their workplaces, the way they were treated by men, their desires, their fears, the socio-political changes towards a more equal position in society compared to men, their need for freedom.
Today, this music genre has been slowly evolving from male-dominated to more balanced. This project walks on this path towards a more balanced representation of the characters in these stories.
