Like Diwali, some meals are special not just because of the food, but because of the people they bring together.
For us, Alefiya and Husain, Diwali has always been about coming together. The kind of evenings where everyone gathers around the table, plates are passed around, mithai is never too far away, and nobody is really in a hurry to leave. There is laughter between bites, stories that somehow get longer as the evening goes on, and that unmistakable feeling of being surrounded by people you are happy to have around.
These are some of our fondest memories of Diwali.
A wholesome, indulgent and festive meal — cooked with care and meant to be shared. A Diwali celebration around the thaal, where good food is only the beginning. We arrive as individuals and leave having eaten together, laughed together and perhaps made a few new connections along the way.
The thaal welcomes everyone, whether you come solo, with friends or with family. Because Diwali is, after all, a little more special when there are more people around to celebrate it with.
We meet at our home in Thane at 7:30 PM.
The evening begins the way every Diwali party always has - with a classic welcome drink & a few games to bring the group closer. Nothing too competitive, just something to spark conversation, break the ice and help everyone settle in. It’s our way of warming up the room before warming up the appetite.
As we prepare to serve the thaal, we continue to share small cultural stories and traditions - the meaning behind the sequence of food, the rhythm of the meal and why it has always been meant to be shared.
The thaal is then served, and the meal unfolds slowly.
Together, we enjoy 8 thoughtfully planned courses, beginning with Mithaas (a dessert) and followed by Kharaas (a savoury appetizer) - alternating through the meal, just as it is traditionally done.
Each dish is curated to balance flavour, texture and portion, allowing the meal to feel indulgent yet light, familiar yet surprising. The menu features our personal favourites prepared the OG Bohri way.
There is no rush at the thaal. The focus is on sharing, conversation, and enjoying the meal together - one course at a time, one story at a time.

Each dish has been chosen with care, keeping the festivities in mind, food that comforts, nourishes, and brings people together. What follows is meant to be enjoyed slowly, one course at a time, as it has always been at our thaal.
