Discovered in the 19th century, the Book of the Dead contained a range of spells that the soul of the deceased would have used during the many stages of Duat or Underworld in order to get to the Field of Reeds. In the earlier days of ancient Egypt, it was thought that only those of higher status, like the Pharaoh, could go into the afterlife but over time, the Egyptians believed that anyone could get into the afterlife. Each book of the dead varies from person to person as people were allowed to choose which spells they wanted to include to guide them throughout the journey of reaching the Field of Reeds. One version, the one that was found in the 19th century, belonged to a man named Ani. He was a scribe from the city of Thebes who lived in the 13th century BCE (before the common era).
