Welcome to Egypt's Book of the Dead! This website was created for the History 10 class for all students in Nova Scotia in mind. For the first section of this class, students are taught what makes ancient civilizations distinct, unique and valued in our current day narrative of Ancient History. Although ancient Egyptians were well-known for multiple reasons, the two aspects of this civilization that stuck with our historical narratives for thousands of years is mummification and the Egyptian afterlife. We will dive into how someone was mummified and what would someone do to get themselves into the Field of Reeds. The activities and resources that are provided on this website were made for both the classroom and your home so your child can learn this wherever they are! In the Nova Scotia curriculum for History 10, there are no GCOs or General Outcomes that students have to know for this course so they will only have to focus on the SCOs or Specific Outcomes. For this lesson, students will fulfill the following outcomes by looking at ancient Egypt and how they looked at the after life;
1.2 demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics that define ancient civilizations
1.4 demonstrate an understanding of the different regions of the ancient world and be able to explain their various contributions.
If you have any questions regarding this lesson, please fill out the form that I have provided for you on this page.
Hope you and your students/children enjoy this lesson as much as I enjoyed making it,
Rachel Sneddon
For each tab, there will be some information that provides a foundation of knowledge that yourself and your child can use in order to dive into the activities. It is encouraged that after your child has finished reading the page to go and find further research on each tab topic so that it will stimulate some critical thinking about the afterlife and how ancient Egyptians thought of it. Your child can use the resources tab to read some articles there before doing their own research. Once the research is done, on the bottom of each page, there are three activities you and your child can do that includes visual, auditory and kinesthetic ways of learning.
This is how you and your child can approach this lesson:
Read the "What is it" tab and watch the video linked on the page.
Read the "Mummification" page, allow your child 20-30 minutes to do the research for this topic and participate in two of the three activities.
Read the "Stages of the Afterlife" page, allow your child 20-30 minutes to do the research and participate in two of the three activities plus the Book of the Dead quizzes.
