Since 2017, we've mentored our middle school’s FTC Teams, including Pioneer Robotics, a world champion team. In the 2020 season, 5980 also helped start and mentor seven FLL teams in our district’s three elementary schools. Our students had the opportunity to mentor the FLL teams throughout their season. By the end of the season, three teams were able to qualify for and compete at the Michigan State Championship (III). We have continued this tradition of mentorship considering this year 29% of our team members mentored an FLL team. Across the district we sponsored 8 challenge teams and 11 explore teams, which is approximately 111 students.

This year we focused on as much student turnout as possible. In order to engage kids in STEAM we needed to focus on mentorship and interactive ways to engage young students. In order to build a community that values the principles of STEAM our team recognizes that it's important to inspire students at a young age. This is why we focus so much on inspiring elementary aged students in our community.
In the fall of 2021, our team hosted our community’s first ever Trunk or Treat event for Halloween, an event where high school clubs can come with decorated cars and pass out candy to our community's youth and promote themselves. This activity was led by EGRR, and the event proved to be a great success. More than 100 people were exposed to our team. We plan to continue Trunk or Treat in the years to come. This has now become an annual tradition for our team and continues to put smiles on kids faces.
