For the purpose of egocentric data collection, a wearable, lightweight autonomous mobile recording platform, compatible with social usage was developed. The platform has to be operated by a single walking operator, posses a minimum autonomy of three hours, be sufficiently small to fit in a 10 liter backpack, and have a control interface that can be operated with one hand. The camera of the platform has to be binocular, with a speed of acquisition of at least 15 frames per second (FPS), have a fast Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and a high speed interface to the onboard computer that collate and stores the data. For the purposes of the navigational dataset, sound recording is not required.
In order to mitigate sudden, unpredictable rotational movements that can occur while the sensors are wore on the head of the operator, a chest mount for the camera was selected.
To improve aesthetics and provide some degree of water ingress protection in case of rain, a waterproof fabric backpack was selected for carrying the platform
Key elements of the platform are highlighted.
The power supply was built combining high power output, pass through, power delivery (PD) capable power banks, with high current PD triggers, to supply 15 volts to the platform. This combination offers reliable, rugged power, with sufficient dust and water ingress protection to be carried safely inside of a backpack.
The PD trigger handles the digital voltage request to the Power bank, so the correct voltage will always be supplied to the ZedBox regardless of the power supply as long as they comply with the PD (USB C Power Delivery Standard.
Final assembly was done in a 3 mm laminated wood board, using elastic fabric for holding the power banks and screws for holding the ZedBox.
