This program connects engineering students (“mentees”) with alumni mentors who can share real-world insights, guidance, and encouragement. Here you’ll find the tools, resources, and event information to help you make the most of your mentoring relationship.

First Meeting: Setting the Foundation

Your first meeting sets the tone for a successful mentoring relationship. Use this time to get to know each other, set expectations, and create momentum.

1. Start with Connection

• Share your background, interests, and career story beyond the resume.

• Invite each other to talk about what drew you to engineering and what you enjoy outside of academics or work.
  
  

2. Talk About Hopes and Concerns

• Discuss what each of you hopes to gain from this mentoring relationship.

• Share any uncertainties — like career direction, imposter syndrome, or balancing commitments.
  
  

3. Agree on Communication Preferences

• Decide how you’ll connect (email, phone, text, video, in person).

• Set a check-in frequency (every 3–4 weeks works well).

• Clarify who will take the lead on scheduling meetings.
  
  

4. Complete the eGOLD Mentoring Agreement

• Mentoring Agreement Google Form

• Walk through the form together — it should take about 10 minutes.

• Either person may submit, but we recommend the mentor take the lead.
  
  

5. Choose One Small Action Step

• End the meeting by agreeing on one specific action before your next check-in.

• Examples: review a resume, attend a student org event, explore internship postings, or schedule a mock interview.
  
  

Tip: This first conversation doesn’t have to be long or formal. Focus on building trust, listening, and starting with a clear path forward.
