What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?
AR is a program that helps teachers and librarians manage and monitor a child’s independent reading practice. Students pick a book at their level and read it at their own pace. When finished, students take a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that the student understood what was read.) AR gives feedback based on the quiz results, which is used by teachers and librarians to help students set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.
For more information, please visit the Parent's Guide to Accelerated Reader [PDF format].
AR Guidelines
AR quizzes may only be taken at school from 7:15 am - 2:45 pm, Monday-Friday
Each student has a personalized AR goal determined by the STAR Reading assessment
Parents may monitor their student's AR progress via Renaissance Home Connect (see more info below)
*CHALLENGE GOAL: Double your individual points goal each 9 weeks to attend the end-of-the-year AR field trip to Adventure Fun Park!
Students will receive two AR grades per 9 weeks: one for meeting the points goal and one for comprehension/accuracy
AR BOOK LEVELS
Every title in the Eden Gardens Magnet Library with an AR quiz has a colored dot on its spine. The color of the dot indicates the reading level of the book.
For example, a green dot means that the book is most appropriate for students reading on a 2.0 - 2.9 reading level.
A quiz label is also placed on the back cover of each book to provide additional information.

STAR Reading™ is an assessment of reading comprehension and skills that uses computer-adaptive technology. Questions continually adjust to a student’s responses. The test contains multiple-choice questions and takes about 15 minutes to complete at school.
Teachers set AR Reading goals for students based on STAR test results.
