STEPS FOR PRINTING:
Send an email to Kathleen Helman (helmak@ rpi.edu) with the following information:
• Full name and RPI email (if not sending from RPI email address)
• Class the print is for and Professor name
• RIN
• Which paper type you’d like
• Dimensions of your piece
• Date you need the print by
• In that same email, include your print ready file. If the file is too large to include in an email, you can send using a Box link instead. If you would prefer to print a test strip first for color checking purposes on your preferred paper, please include a small test portion of your image along
with your full piece, and let Kathleen know you’d like a test printed. A test strip is not required, but some prefer to have one made depending on the project. Please keep in mind that you’ll have to come to Sage 2410 to approve the test print before your full piece can be printed.
• Kathleen will send you back a quote for how much it will cost to print your piece on the paper type you’ve selected. Please note: your print will not be started until written approval via email is given, so please respond as soon as you can. This cost will come out of your bursar account when you sign the receipt upon pickup.
• Your piece will be put in a queue, which is first come, first served (order dictated by who approves their quotes first). Once your print is ready, Kathleen will email you. You may pick up your work at Sage 2406.
Due to the large volume of students printing, and the sometimes long print times per piece depending on size, paper type, etc, there are no same day printing appointments. However, if you have questions about anything and would like to chat, please let Kathleen know and an appointment can be set up to go over them.
Pieces should be submitted no less than 5 days before they are needed.
Please remember that around midterms and finals things will be very busy. There is a large volume of prints being made at these times, and as such, turnaround will be slower than usual. Please plan accordingly! The sooner you submit your piece, the
better, as line priority is first come first served. If there aren’t many people in line, you will likely receive your print back fairly quickly. The 5 days ensures that if things are busy, we will have enough time.
PRINT READY DOCUMENTS
Please send your file as a PDF or JPG.
• Make sure your document is sized to the size you need printed at 300 DPI.
• Make sure your document is in CMYK.
• Set up your document to have bleeds, and extend all artwork out to those lines (.125”-.25” bleed is plenty).
• Export your document with crop marks and bleeds.
Be sure to note in your email if you have pieces that need to fold, (or any other special instructions) and set up your PDF accordingly so that it folds the way you need it to once printed.

Other Printing:
VCC Glossy Plotter Printer
(NOT lasting, NOT archival)

About Plotting:
https://itssc.rpi.edu/hc/en-us/articles/360010325851-About-Plotting
Please see tips for successful plotting:
https://itssc.rpi.edu/hc/en-us/articles/360009794092
Helpful info: The plotter paper is 36 inches wide, but the actual content space is 34 inches. So your document could be 36 wide, but have an inch of whitespace on either side.
For height, I would recommend the same amount of padding there. If your work is vertical, you can of course rotate it to fit into this space for the lowest cost. You can print much longer if you desire as the plotter has continuous paper up to 72 inches long, with a minimum paper height of 11 inches.
You can print .jpg or .png files but for more failsafe measures you should make a PDF in Photoshop or you can use Illustrator: create a document 36" by height + 2", then use File->Place to insert your document. You can then do "Save As" and switch the file type to PDF.
You can configure your computer to have the HP 1055CM plotter drivers properly installed.
Or
take the PDF file to the VCC and open it in Acrobat Reader. Switch the printer to vcplt or vcp7100g for glossy at a little extra charge. The checkboxes are:
"Automatically select paper size"
"Allow use of custom sizes"
Select both of those and the rulers in the preview should update to be your document's size. Then you should be able to send it.
The printout shows up in the racks on the right side of the VCC building, near the glass-enclosed classroom. In general, they will put obviously bad printouts up without saying anything, but you can get a refund if there was a problem on their end by going to the help desk.
You should cut your work carefully so it doesn't have the little label that they print on it. There is a cutting board in West Hall Studio 214 or use a T-square and a sharp exacto knife on one of the cutting boards, but at all times please be mindful and use care. If you need assistance, simply ask.
