My name is Eeshal Mohammad and I am currently a senior in high school graduating May 2025. I've loved to draw since I was a child and grew up teaching myself different techniques. I took art classes each year in school throughout my elementary and middle schools and one year in high school. I mostly draw/paint in realism, but love to venture and mix up the realism up with other styles. One of these other styles is surrealism!
Some of my other hobbies/interests include playing guitar, fashion, reading, and baking!
I first started drawing when I was in elementary school. I remember the first project I was assigned. It was to draw and color a character from the children's book The Rainbow Fish which we had just read in class. I loved creating something with my own hands which had multiple parts working together to produce a cohesive image in the end. Ever since that first art class, I continued to draw and fell in love with art a little more with each project.
Moving on through high school, I continued taking art classes. I was excited as these were more technique based and full of peers who also had a passion for art. I learned how to use many more different mediums I had not experimented with before such as oil and acrylic paints, and ink. It was in this class my sophomore year where I learned the most about art. I improved my skill greatly and began participating in art competitions. The VASE Scholastic Art Competition was the first of them. I started off at the regional level and advanced all the way to the state level, competing with thousands of other high school students in Texas. I was very proud of myself because I was nervous to be competing with my art, but I had made it so far! At the state level, my art was scored highly and this only enriched my passion for art.
Soon after this I entered another competition, the National Celebrating Art Competition in Spring of 2023. The artwork I submitted titled Withdrawn was chosen to be published in their Spring 2023 Celebrating Art Anthology. Again, this pushed me to work hard in spending time in art to further improve my skill.
A small, but great win in my heart was at our school’s art show where all the art students put their art on display for the school body to see. I won “Best Graphite Drawing.” My art teacher was very particular about trying our best on our artworks and had very high standards for quality. She was a well-known and well regarded artist known across all the school districts as one of the best art teachers in Texas. I felt the most accomplished when she chose one of my artworks to be regarded as the best from the all students, even though this was a small feat compared to the others.
Throughout the process of the Global Encounters Festival Art Gallery, my dad has been the biggest support. He is the biggest fan of my art and pushes me to keep drawing, even though it may just be a hobby. He hung up my artworks all over the house and never fails to motivate me to keep drawing. He is always there for support when I need critiquing on a new piece or confidence when entering an artwork into a competition.
To me art is a way I can wind down and relax. The steps and the process of creating an artwork brings me a sense of satisfaction that no other hobby can. Art has even pushed me to pursue other hobbies like guitar and dive deeper into fashion. It has taught me that self-expression is one of the most important things a person can do. Through art, I can express my love for other things, my emotions, and even stories that show who I am in a way words cannot.
