The final Reptile Smart Tank implementation uses a ESP32 microcontroller system which is capable of self-adjusting its own temperature, humidity, light, and water level to feed the reptile. The tank’s electrical design consists of two power converters from 120 VAC to 12 VDC to provide electricity for the whole system. It is fully built with the ability to provide enough power at full-load, function with any changes, and accept modifications or new setups from the user.

DHT 22
For our temperature and humidity sensor, we decided to use two DHT22s to detect a large range of temperatures and humidity with more accuracy. It' s dimensions are larger than a DHT11 but since we were designing for a 40 gallon tank (36x18x17 inches), the size discrepancy is not very noticeable.

HC SR04
We decided to use an ultrasonic sensor placed above the water line of the water bowl and covering the electrical components with waterproof silicone to prevent them from being exposed to any moisture. The ultrasonic sensor will detect if the distance to the water surface is too far and if it needs refilling. It will also be out of the reptile’s way and any connecting wires will also be covered and waterproofed

To control our system, we chose the ESP32 microcontroller chip over other microcontrollers primarily because it has WiFi capability, which is important for remote user input and viewing. It is used for many IoT applications and can upload code from different programming environments. Because it also has low power consumption, it is ideal for increasing the lifetime of a project that has a system operating 24/7.
