How it all started?
Almost two decades ago, a quiet revolution was underway. Madam Ooi Piek See, a connector of people, together with her partners ignited a spark across Malaysia. Their leadership workshops, held from Kedah to Johor, were more than just training sessions; they were catalysts for nation building. Little did they know, the seeds planted then would bear fruit years later.
Fast forward to 2022, as Malaysia was coming out of the pandemic, a seemingly ordinary phone call between Paul Lau and Piek See would alter the course of Malaysian education. Their conversation, filled with shared frustrations and aspirations, sparked an idea: what if they could bring together a group of like-minded individuals to reimagine education?
"What if they could bring together a group of like-minded individuals to reimagine education?"
From this humble beginning, a movement was born. The core group of passionate educators gathered, united by a desire to break down silos, foster collaboration, and create a more equitable education system. They met in secret, their conversations filled with equal parts excitement and trepidation. As the group grew, so did their conviction. By December 2022, their journey was already marked by countless hours of discussion, debate, and dreaming.
A defining moment arrived in March 2023 when the inaugural Education Summit was held in Kluang, Johor. 32 educators from twelve schools converged, their energy palpable. The two-day event was a crucible of ideas, a catalyst for change. It was here that the true potential of their vision began to crystallise.
As momentum built, a name was needed to embody this emerging movement. A name that would resonate with educators, parents, and students alike. It would have to be a name that captured the essence of growth, collaboration, and a shared purpose.
That name would be Edutropism.
The journey of Edutropism began with a simple vision: to transform our nation through the pillar of education.
The journey of Edutropism began with a simple vision: to transform our nation through the pillar of education. By reimagining the purpose of our schools and redefining collaboration among our institutions, we have witnessed an inspiring surge in participation from schools nationwide. It is the dedication and passion of educators that emboldens us to dare to dream of a better tomorrow. We deeply appreciate their unwavering commitment and hope for their continued support and strength. As schools and educators learn, grow, and work together, we are confident that this collective effort will lead to shared success and significant educational advancement for our nation.
It all began in 2022 with a small group of educators—passionate, yet troubled by the state of education in Malaysia. They saw the gaps, the silos, the struggles, and instead of waiting for change, they decided to be the change.
Despite their already overworked schedules, these educators—all volunteers, working on this part-time—pushed forward with one goal: to build a community where educators support educators, where schools don’t work in isolation, and where the purpose of education is reimagined.
And so, Edutropism was born.
More than just a conference or a network, Edutropism is a movement—driven by heart, sustained by purpose, and powered by collaboration. It is a space where teachers, school leaders, and changemakers come together, not because they have to, but because they believe in something bigger than themselves.
This is what makes it noble. This is what makes it worth it.
Real change doesn’t happen because we talk about it. It happens when we come together and do something about it.
This is Edutropism.
