Hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to learn more about me prior to working together.
My name is Katelyn Poiter and I am a passionate educator. I am certified PreK-6th grade, all subjects from the State of Maryland. I received my Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Notre Dame of Maryland University in 2015, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Following graduation, I accepted a position teaching fourth grade for four years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. During this time, I strengthened my practice as a teacher and began tutoring outside of school hours. In the Fall of 2019, I moved from Baltimore to Chicago. I spent the year working towards my masters, while teaching online and substituting in classrooms grades PreK-8th grade. This allowed me a unique opportunity to be exposed to curriculum in a variety of grades and reconnect with much of the theory I learned during my undergraduate degree.
In the Spring of 2021, I completed my Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). This was inspired by my unique opportunity to teach in Hungary and Germany, and my desire to reach every student in my classroom. After completing my masters degree, my husband and I welcomed our first son into the world. We moved, once again, to Pennsylvania where I am currently staying home with him while continuing to teach through tutoring.
Educating students is truly my vocation in life. My mother, a high school principal and educator for twenty years, has been a mentor to me along the way. Helping students become more confident in themselves and finding the joy in learning inspires me daily.
Your child is one of your most valuable gifts to this world. When looking for a tutor, you want to find someone who is going to help your child succeed and understand your desires as a parent. I am committed to listening to your requests and working with you and your child to create a plan to achieve these goals.
As someone who attended tutoring as a child, I fully understand the need for trust and comfort in this process. This is why my first session with your child will be free of charge, during this time I will get to know your child, your hopes for their learning, and then you can decide if it is the right fit. We will only see success if we are all committed and comfortable.
