The EduClowns are non-professional actors, selected from within a network of self-help groups affected by TB and HIV/AIDS, originating from communities in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, India. Wearing clown masks and clothing, the performers can step outside themselves, no longer constrained by the traditional boundaries that bind them to taboo and prevent them from confronting stigma.
EduClowns are also known as the “red-nosed”; they offer an alternative way to educate the public about pertinent yet sensitive health-related issues. Their displays are a thought-provoking, yet entertaining way to stimulate discussion and action tangibly.
The EduClowns' past efforts include campaigns for child health and sexual education, promoting the use of condoms, and raising awareness of TB and HIV.
