“The Life of an Undocumented Minor in LA”
Please watch the video as a way to ground yourself in the narrative, journey, and experience of undocumented students.
By challenging the way we consume media and learn from the lives of undocumented youth and their families, we can challenge our biases and understanding of the world. This video allows us to step into the shoes of an undocumented student, who at a glance might be labeled as distracted, disengaged, or maybe even non-deserving of free public education. Like the saying a picture is worth a thousand words it is important for us to take time to stop, listen, talk and engage with members of different communities.
On this site, you will find an array of resources you can leverage as an educator, advocate or ally of a young undocumented youth’s life.
*Note: This is intentionally a live document meant to exist through communal collaboration. Reflected in this document are resources and ideas from allies of all walks of life, educators in k-12 and higher education, and undocumented students. If you might like to add any resources to any sections or might have ideas for additional sections please contact Jeanny Marroquin jeanny.marroquin@cgu.edu
Questions to keep in mind as you look through the resources
What might be the prompts or resources which feel comfortable and easy to integrate into my classroom or learning space?
Are there any prompts, phrases, concepts, resources or words which might cause a sudden reaction?
How might the feelings and thoughts I am having telling of the environment I might be creating for young minds?
Might there be privilege impacting the way I lead or show up in the classroom?
Are there preconceived notions or biases rising as I explore which resources I might be interested in integrating into my classroom?
