Not all students have mastered their skills in how to act respectful or without misbehavior. Instead of punishing the misbehaving student with detention of a write up, I will take a moment to talk to the student directly as to why their behavior isn't acceptable. I want my students to understand that they have the power to pursue their life goals, and with that comes the skills to behave in a classroom. I want them all to succeed, so I will not punish them simply because they are acting out of line.
While it is important for students to develop skills in independence, it's more important for them to learn among their peers. This not only allows them to become more social, but it can start their journey into learning how to network. Having a peer assist you in the lesson or even share notes will allow each student to progress. That's why I encourage group projects, shoulder-partner discussion, and pair assignments in my classroom.
My classroom has an award system where I provide things such as gold star stickers, trinkets, or an appreciative note on assignments. I believe this system allows students to feel encouraged to work harder on their assignments and boost their grade averages. It also lessons the amount of misbehavior in my classroom.
