Q: How do I go about joining the lab?
A: If you are interested in joining the Education and Career Equity Lab, please send me an email at: Pat.Garriott@du.edu. Tell me about your research interests and provide your availability.
Q: Do I need to fill out an application to join?
A: You do not need to complete a formal application, but I do like to speak with students about their interests before joining the lab just to make sure it is a good fit.
Q: Are there any limitations as to who can participate?
A: My only limitation is that I ask that students be able to attend bi-weekly lab meetings to be part of the lab. I also tend to cap the number of students at around 12, just to insure a quality experience for everyone.
Q: What kinds of research tasks do students usually do in the lab?
A: This often depends on the student and their previous research experience. However, students typically complete tasks such as assisting with literature reviews, collecting and entering data, transcribing interviews, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, developing conference presentations, and writing manuscripts.
Q: Are there opportunities for students to present and/or publish in your lab?
A: Yes. Most students have co-authored at least one conference presentation and/or manuscript submitted for publication as a result of their work in the lab. I place a high value on mentoring students and believe including them as active members on presentations and publications is the best way to achieve this.
Q: Can I be a member of your lab while working on other research teams?
A: Yes. However, my colleagues and I generally recommend limiting the number of research teams on which you participate to avoid over-commitment and burnout.
Q: Do students on your research team typically apply for PhD programs and are they successful?
A: Yes. Students working in the lab have generally been very successful in their applications for PhD programs in counseling psychology, developmental psychology, and social work.
