Who is President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo?

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo or popularly known as "GMA", is a Filipino Academic and politician who served as the 14th President of the Philippines from January 2001 to June 2010 .

Achievements in Science and Technology

During her administration, the science and technology sector of the Philippines was dubbed as the “Golden Age”. Numerous laws and projects has been created and strongly supported that concerns both the environment and science to push technology as a tool to increase the country’s economic level.


This is to help increase the productivity from Science, Technology and Innovations (STI) and help benefit the poor people.


Filipinnovation

She launched a national innovation strategy, coining the term "Filipinnovation" to describe the project. She believe that innovation is a key to our national competitiveness. She provided extensive support for graduate of S&T Scholarship programs.

The STI was developed further by strengthening the schools and education system such as the Philippine Science High School (PSHS). Future Filipino scientists and innovators can be produced through this system.


Electronic Procurement System (EPS)

Secondly, The Electronic Procurement System or EPS is one initiative of government to improve and modernize government's procurement services. It involves the creation and operation of a central portal for government procurement, bidding and supplier information requirements, and the increasing use of the portal among government agencies. The EPS is expected to attain transparency in public procurement activities.


Roll-On, Roll-Off transport” (RORO)

Next is “Roll-On, Roll-Off transport” (RoRo) system. In 2003, President Arroyo spearheaded the creation of the “Road RoRo Transport System,” a project designed to carry rolling stock cargo that does not require cranes for loading. The system was part of the 919-kilometer Strong Republic Nautical Highway that connected the major islands of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao through an integrated network of highway and vehicular ferry routes. It was one of her administration’s priority programs to ensure fast and economical movement of goods and people, and to boost domestic tourism and trade.


Biofuel

Lastly is the Biofuel, Helping the environment was one of the focus in developing technology in the Philippines. One of the more known laws to be passed by her administration was the R.A. 9367 or the “Biofuels” act. This act promotes the development and usage of biofuels throughout the country. This potentially enables a cheaper alternative to gasoline as a medium in producing energy. Also, this benefits the environment since it boasts a cleaner emission compared to regular fuel.
